Senator Albert addresses Petroleum Energy Law and Policy Workshop in Abuja

Chairman, Senate Committee on Gas Resources, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan on Monday in Abuja presented a paper titled ’’Leveraging Gas for Nigeria’s Economic Growth: The role of the parliament at the 3rd International Institute for Petroleum Energy Law and Policy (IIPELP) annual Judges workshop on Petroleum, Gas and Power Sectors.

Present at the workshop were the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen and other legal luminaries from the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Senator Albert pointed out that Nigeria’s gas sector has the capacity of redefining the economic recession in the country if the wastages incurred through gas flaring can be curbed hence the need for the ongoing processes on the needed legislation. ’’Considering the enormous wastages in the Gas sector that runs into billions of naira through gas flaring we are thinking seriously on how to help Nigeria get these revenue from this sector than loose the revenue, that possibly informs the on-going legislative processes at coming up with an acceptable law in that regard’’ Albert noted.

He stressed that the 8th senate is very supportive of moves to come up with a legal framework that will shape the fortunes of the gas sector for the benefit of all Nigerians.

In his keynote address, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justice Walter Onnoghen said the need for the interface at this time of Nigeria’s history was absolutely necessary in view of the contributions of the Petroleum and Gas sectors to Nigeria’s growth and called for more of such discourse to help the country. ‘’ We need to collaborate more, have more of such interface and think of ways to strengthen our collective revenue potentials as well as the enabling legal guide  that will make Nigerians to enjoy more from democracy’’ Onnoghen posited.

It could be recalled that this is the 3rd time the International Institute for Petroleum Energy Law & Policy (IIPELP) Annual Judges Workshop on Petroleum, Gas and Power Sectors will be holding in Abuja.
