AKS GOVT TO BUILD COMPUTER LABORATORIES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has approved the building of 10 Computer laboratories, one in each of the 10 Federal constituencies in the State.

The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien accompanied by the resource person for the project, Barr Jerry Akpan disclosed this during inspection and assessment of some of the selected secondary schools in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituencies.

Addressing the Principals of Cornelia Corneli Collage, Afaha Oku, Uyo and her counterpart at Gorretti Girls Secondary School in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Dr.Nse Essien explained that the decision to provide computer laboratories to the schools was to ensure that all students from public Secondary Schools across the State are computer literate.

His words “The Akwa Ibom State Government intends to provide computer laboratories to all Secondary Schools in the State. For a start, the Governor is building one fully equipped internet ready computer laboratory in each of the 10 Federal Constituencies”.

Dr.Nse Essien who maintained that the World today is driven by technology added that with this arrangement, students in public Secondary Schools would be fully equipped to meet up with the challenges of the 21stcentury.

The Commissioner said the project when completed would serve as Computer Resource Center in the Federal Constituency. “It will serve not only the school, but adjoining schools as well. It will serve as training centers for students preparing for Computer Based Test. (CBT).

The Science and Technology boss expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel for approving the construction of the computer laboratories in the State, noting that with the free and compulsory education policy already in place, students of the State origin stand a better chance of competing with their counterparts in the developed world.

Earlier, the resource person for the project, Barr. Jerry Akpan said the State Government decided to carry out the project in the selected schools with intention of extending to otherSecondary Schools across the State in due course.

Barr Akpan assured that the project would be completed within 2 months and advised the students to take advantage of the computer laboratories to improve on their knowledge of computer.

Responding, the Principal of Gorretti Girls Secondary Schools Ikot Ekpene, Mrs. Idongesit Johnson said she was grateful that her school was selected for the pilot scheme, assuring that the project when completed would not be vandalized.

Mrs. Johnson lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for sustaining the free and compulsory education policy saying it was yielding positive result as evidenced by Schools population in Akwa Ibom State.

On the inspection team was the Director of Engineering in the Ministry of Science and Technology, Engr. Nicholas Idungafa.
